Government of Belize Notes
On 1 June 1973 British Honduras was officially renamed Belize, and in 1974 the first bank notes under the Government of Belize were put into circulation.
The first notes issued under the Government of Belize maintained the colours and design of the Government of British Honduras fourth issue of bank notes. The first issue dated 1 January 1974 circulated with five denominations $1, $2, $5, $10 and $20. Subsequent printing of these notes is dated 1975 and 1976. On 1 January 1981, the Monetary Authority of Belize demonetized all notes issued under the Currency Ordinance 1965 by the Board of Commissioner of Currency. The Government of Belize notes therefore are not legal tender of Belize and are redeemable only at the Central Bank of Belize. These notes were demonetized in 1981. Coins issued under the Government of British Honduras are still legal tender of Belize.
