Obverse: Portrait of Queen Mother and Regent of Spain Maria Cristina. A seated child writing notes is portrayed at right.
Reverse: Spanish Royal Coat of Arms
The bank was created via royal decree on May 5, 1888 and received a charter valid for 25 years. The bank was not actually established until 1890, with the office located in San Juan. Four years later a branch was added in Mayaguez.

Maria Christina of Austria

Maria Christina Henriette Desideria Felicitas Raineria of Austria (21 July 1858 – 6 February 1929) was Queen of Spain as the second wife of King Alfonso XII. She was regent during the minority of their son, King Alfonso XIII, and the vacancy of the throne between her husband's death and her son's birth.
